I've read your two posts about your memoir and read your profile. Interesting that the Odyssey experience meant so much to you. I volunteered in a state mental hospital in a wing for severe and chronic patients (in Danbury, CT) the summer of 1965, having grown up WORLDS away from anything but the totally sane, (frightened of all else). I sure remember it. People who were as close to nonpeople as they come, and some with a "sense of irony" that was awesome.
My attitudes -- I think McCarthyism scared the '50s into radical prejudice of every possible sort. No wonder the upheavals of the '60s. No wonder
I've been tossing around thoughts like yours for a long time in re the publishing world because I have a way of writing for bilingual children who are learning to read and I don't expect any publisher to want to chance it. I know their financial stakes. So I think about hawking self-illustrated copies on the streets. I think of making publishers come to me, versus wasting my emotional strength and time etc.
So I don't have much to suggest to you, except that I am very curious what sort of training in psychoanalysis you had in the 1970s. I believe the field was beginning to shift into a post-Freudian mode about then, shifting too because of medical management and costs and because of new pharmaceutical possibilities, various things swinging things in a big way.
I mention this partly because I don't think of psychoanalysts as experts in constant stream of words. Perhaps you have to hang out more where you have to carry at least a fair share of the conversation most of the time. Or you'll act like a patient and have a massive transference onto the General Readership? I don't know. But hi, anyway.
